For nearly three decades, a moon bear named Sen knew only the cold bars of a cramped metal cage. Captured from the wild as a cub, Sen spent 27 harrowing years on a bile farm in Vietnam, where he was kept for the cruel practice of harvesting digestive fluids for traditional medicine. Denied the ability to roam, climb, or even see the sun, his life was a repetitive cycle of confinement and isolation while the world outside continued without him.
The turning point for Sen finally arrived when the dedicated rescue team from Animals Asia intervened. After years of careful negotiation, the farm owners agreed to surrender the bear, opening the door to a life he had never truly known. As he was moved from the farm to a sanctuary, the transition marked the end of a lifetime of suffering and the beginning of a miraculous journey toward rehabilitation and recovery.
Upon his release into the sanctuary, Sen’s reaction was profound. For the first time in 27 years, he felt the touch of sunlight on his fur and the sensation of fresh grass beneath his paws. Initially cautious of the vast, open spaces, Sen slowly began to rediscover his natural instincts. Caregivers watched with joy as his body language softened, and he eventually began to explore his environment, climb, and even interact with other rescued bears.
While bile farming is now illegal in Vietnam, the fight to save others like Sen continues, with approximately 150 moon bears still estimated to be in captivity. Sen’s story serves as a powerful reminder of both the cruelty of the past and the hope for a future where no animal is kept in darkness. Today, he lives a life of peace, resting under the open sky and experiencing the freedom that was stolen from him so long ago.
